Johannes Hänsch was born as the son of the sculptor Adolf Hänsch and his wife Johanna (née Lehmann) in his parents’ apartment at Pionierstraße 6 (today Blücherstraße 9 in the Tempelhofer Vorstadt. He began his artistic training in his father’s studio and initially continued it in the workshops of other sculptors before deciding to become a painter. On December 11, 1897, he began studying at the “Königlich akademische Hochschule für die Bildenden Künste” in Berlin under Eugen Bracht, Friedrich Kallmorgen and Paul Vorgang. He became a student of the Academy’s master class for landscape painting under Professor Albert Hertel. As a freelance landscape painter, he was a member of the “Verein Berliner Künstler”. Since 1903 Hänsch participated annually in the Great Berlin Art Exhibition as well as in the exhibitions of the Berlin Artists’ Association and in the Munich Glass Palace. His colorful painting showed a clear influence of Impressionism. He painted almost exclusively deserted landscapes from all regions of Germany. Paintings depicting human figures were a rare exception, but he did create some mostly humorous self-portraits. This piece has an attribution mark,
