Here we have a wonderful sleek cape by Yves Saint Laurent from the 1980s. I love the rose bengal hue partly because pink was Yves Saint Laurent’s favourite colour after black. I am delighted to have found a photo of an Yves Saint Laurent haute couture wool cape in the same colour from A/W 1989-1990 (see the picture after the label shot).
Note that the colour in person is most near to the one on the pictures with the mannequin.
The design is from the ‘Variation’ line which was a second ready-to-wear line – after ‘Rive Gauche’ – that was created in 1982 and existed for a short period during the 1980s only.
The eye-catching and versatile cape is made in France from pure wool and cut very simple, the back is one large panel and then there are two panels that fall across the shoulder and down the front. Beautiful double seam detailing along the border and rounded edges.
No closure and unlined. Labelled ‘Yves Saint Laurent Variation’ and made in France. Marked a French size 34 but will fit a variety of sizes as to the undefined shoulder seams and the open design. You just drape it over your shoulders and it falls into place.
Excellent vintage condition. Appears to have been worn very little. One small nip on the very top of the fabric near the right shoulder.
Will fit up to a size M.
