Vintage Design
A rare bentwood lounge chair with beautiful weaved rattan on the seat and the backrest. It was designed and made by Gebrüder Thonet around 1920. We can find the chair in the old Thonet furniture catalogue as ‘Model 1059’.
This piece is bigger (especially the backrest) and more comfortable to sit on than any other Thonet chairs designed for dining. The use of the rattan weave on both the seat and the backrest provides more comfort than earlier versions made of solid wood. Overall this chair combines Thonet’s trademark technique of using steamed bent wood, with a soft elegance of Art Nouveau design.
This chair is in great vintage condition with no visible damage. The frame has been strengthened and the rattan on the backrest has been repaired in a recent restoration that also fully revived the rich colour of the entire piece. The piece has been hand finished by Shellac and Nitro varnishes in order to achieve the original gloss finish.
