Spectacular and very decorative pair of dressers with Louis XV Style chinoiseries, 1910 – France
Exquisite pair of small chests of drawers in Louis XV style with chinoiseries, made around 1910 in France. Each of them features a stunning black St. Laurent marble top. It is characterized by its black background and its brown and white veining; It has been extracted in Laurens (France) since 1885.
This exquisite beveled marble rests on a body with three mixtilinear faces. On the front, two registers with storage capacity, the lower one has a sinuous profile that acts as a skirt. The chest of drawers stands on galvanized legs, the two front ones with sablots. All these fittings (handles, corner pieces) are made of mercury-gilded bronze and then chiseled.
However, what is most striking about this pair of side tables is its painted ornament: chinoiseries. The motif reflects European perceptions of East Asia at the time. A lake landscape is presented, with mounds of earth with pagodas, bridges and trees, as well as people dressed in traditional costumes performing different actions. Use of gold and red, which stand out greatly with the black and shiny lacquer of the background. At the top, some stylized clouds. Idyllic scene, symmetry in the couple, almost identical landscape is presented in each dresser. For its part, the sides are decorated with naturalistic and beautiful hand-painted flowers, which include the color blue.
