Mr. John was one of the preeminent American milliners during the mid twentieth century, closing up his elaborate New York salon sometime in the 1970s, although he continued to design hats for his private clientele until his death in 1993. This example of his work is a spectacular find and a show stopper. The main body, in black felt, has a rounded crown and has a subtle upside down boat shape; slightly pointed front and back, it sits directly on top of the head. What distinguishes this particular hat is its dramatic embellishments, from its bouffant and deep veil, which terminates in a huge bow in back, to the iridescent leaf-shaped feathers on long tentacles that “dance” around the top, all further ornamented by a few clear crystals randomly placed. In excellent condition.
